Acculturation

What does this mean? Changes that occur in individuals from both the host and immigrant groups as a result of long-term and sustained intercultural contacts between individuals and groups from differing cultural origins. (redfiled, Linton, & Herskovits, 1936)

Implications for New Zealand Integration of different cultures in NZ involves changes in – The social environment – opportunities and challenges for social interactions between members of different cultures.

Impact on minority groups Minority groups more affected because of the need to adjust and adapt to – Institutions – Cultural values of the social infrastructure

Two key aspects The meaning and retention of traditional culture Participation in the wider society. Together they lead to better integration

Family dynamics and acculturation Needs good social support and good personal relationships Migrations requires adaptation to new ways of behaving and different belief systems.
