Self Study Project MGT 494 Lecture-13 1

Recap Prioritize Goals and Performance Ranges (Step 6) Most people aren't very patient. They want everything, and they want it now. So, goal conflicts happen because they don't prioritize their goals and pursue those of relative immediacy or importance. The result is frustration, which sometimes leads to feelings of despair resulting from failure. 2

Today’s Lecture Vision and Performance Ranges Write an Action Plan (Step 7) Evaluate Progress and Take Corrective Action (Step 8) Self Study Project – Problem Identification 3

Write an Action Plan (Step 7) – The lack of a plan is the enemy of action – The lack of action is the enemy of a plan Once you identify the objectives or milestones required for reaching your goals, you can plan the actions necessary for reaching the milestones. Most people leave out this link between goals and action. Once you see your destination and think about what it takes to get there, instead of leaping right from goals to a list of activities (things to do) to achieve them, you must identify the steps for getting there (milestones or outcomes) that keep you on track and give you a yardstick for measuring your progress as you go. 8

Resources Most plans succeed or crash on the status of resources for achieving objectives. Anything or anyone contributing to or adding value to your work and your life is a resource or a means for achieving objectives: Contacts (work place associates, prospects, clients, customers, vendors, family, friends), equipment, capital goods, cash, facilities, or other assets. When planning, make a list of resources you may need and do not have, as well as those you do have. You may come up with a need for additional resources later, but you have a starting place and can plan for acquiring resources you need but don't have. 9

Obstacles or Barriers The absence or lack of resources is only one kind of barrier. Others include lack of management support, defective materials, inadequate planning, and other conditions in the way of achieving objectives or that remove value from your objectives. When planning, think about the possible barriers to getting to where you want to go. To identify barriers and to decide what to do when an obstacle gets in the way of progress toward goals, play "what if...?" and use "worst case" scenarios. Example "What if supplies I need are not available?" – Then turn the barrier into a goal. "Supplies will stock up by tomorrow at a cost of $2, " Continue action planning by listing what you have to do to overcome the barrier and meet objectives. 10

Evaluate Progress and Take Corrective Action (Step 8) How do you define success? No one doubts that any answer is debatable. – Wealth. Position. Status. Happiness. What drives you may not drive the person sitting next to you. – How do you measure success? In terms of the amount of wealth you have? – In terms of the roles you play in your communities? In terms of the number of people you manage? – In terms of the degree of satisfaction you express? – What works for you may not work for someone else. By the definition of self-management, any answer is correct as long as it expresses your values, your vision for your life, your goals, and your action plans. And, all those values vision, goals, and action plans are subject to modification, change, or replacement. 16

17

Self Study Project Problem Identification – Differentiate fact from opinion – Specify underlying causes – Consult each faction involved for information – State the problem specifically – Identify what standard or expectation is violated – Determine in which process the problem lies – Avoid trying to solve the problem without data 18
