HOW FAST CAN SOMETHING GO VIRAL? Think about how quickly something can spread over the Internet. Here are a few positive items that spread quickly: Laughing Baby Evolution of Dance Just remember that not only positive things spread quickly, negative things can spread quickly too! So be nice and think of others when posting things online.

THINGS WE CAN DO ON THE INTERNET Positive Read or research Play games Learn Blog Communicate with friends and family Apply for jobs Get directions Share information Negative Hackers Privacy invasion Cyberbullying Gambling Online addiction Inactivity Sexting

HOW CAN WE IMPACT PEOPLE IN A POSITIVE WAY? Develop a hashtag (#makeithappy) Positive Tweet Compliment on Facebook Create an acronym (THINK) Post a positive video Online donations Online petitions

DIGITAL FOOTPRINT What is it? There are two ways... An active footprint is when YOU post something online A passive footprint is when someone else posts something about you online It starts before you are born and it is stored all over

DIGITAL FOOTPRINT You footprint is important for your future: both for education and employment Be in charge of your footprint and the impact that you make Keep yourself safe: Make sure your profiles are private Delete accounts that you don't use Don't post or share personal information with people you don't know (like your address, phone number, birthday, etc)

BEING A GOOD DIGITAL CITIZEN What it means to be a digital citizen: Being a digital citizen is also about having rights and responsibilities in the digital world, connecting with other people, and being able to make a positive impact and a real difference in the world We are citizens of online communities just like we are citizens of real world communities, and when we are in either one we need to follow the rules, know what is acceptable, know our roles, and know what is appropriate, considerate and respectful

ERGONOMICS Germs spread by technology Make sure that you clean you cell phones, tablets and computers regularly Laptop burns Make sure you place something between your skin and your laptop to avoid burns Headaches from staring at screens for too long Every 20 minutes look 20 meters away for 20 seconds Hearing loss from headphones Don’t play your music too loud when you are wearing headphones Headphones leading to accidents Don’t wear headphone when you are walking around traffic How old are your ears?

ERGONOMICS Sleeping problems from looking at screens before bed The artificial light from our screens suppresses the release of melatonin, which helps us sleep Computers causing neck and back pain Poor posture and hunching over can cause neck pain This causes wear and tear on your spine Car accidents from using mobile devices In Ontario it is illegal to use ANY kind of device while driving (phone, GPS, adjusting the radio) Taking your eyes off the road for 2 seconds doubles your risk for crashing Inactivity year olds should get 60 minutes of physical activity every day

STRANGERS Meeting people online, sharing information and learning from people all over the world is what makes the Internet so amazing you need to be careful when you meet strangers online, because some of them may be trying to manipulate or trick you sometimes you meet people in real life and then get to know them better online - these people are still strangers Be safe, use caution, and if something doesn't seem or feel right then tell a trusted adult Don't feel ashamed if someone tries to trick you online because it can happen to anyone It's harder to tell when people are trying to trick you online because they could make a fake profile and because it's hard to get meaning from text

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO STAY SAFE WHEN USING TECHNOLOGY? Use strong passwords (use capital and small letters, numbers and symbols) Make sure you use pins or Passcodes on your tablets and cell phones Don't share your passwords with friends or people you don’t know Don't share personal information (Address, phone number, birthday)

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO STAY SAFE WHEN USING TECHNOLOGY? Be cautious with people you meet on the Internet Don't open links or messages from people that you don't know Don't accept friends that you don't know in real life Make sure you use the privacy settings with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat – Friends only!
