Vocabulary Strategy for Antonyms From the story “Tops and Bottoms”

Antonyms WWhen you are reading you may come across words you do not recognize/know. SSometimes an author will use an antonym for a word. WWhen you come to a word you don’t know read to see if there is an antonym. AAn antonym can help you understand the meaning of an unknown word.

 Look at the words around the word you don’t know. The author may have used an antonym.  Look for words that seem to have the opposite meanings. Think about the word you know.  Use that word to help you figure out the meaning of its antonym.
