WHO IT WAS? Jan Matejko was one of the greatest Polish Painters, I wouldn't be afraid to say he was a genius of his times. He was born in Cracow in 1838.
FAMILY His father Franciszek Ksawery Matejko was a painter and he lived in the Czech Republic. He came to Kraków and he married Joanna Karolina Rossberg. Franciszek was a Catholic but Joanna was a Protestant. They lived in Kraków. Joanna and Franciszek had eleven children. Franciszek Matejko
Jan Matejko was seven years old when his mother died. He was thirteen years old when he began to study at the Cracow School of Fine Arts. Matejko travelled to many countries: France, Italy, Hungary, Turkey. His paintings mostly refer to Polish History. In 1862 he painted one of his most famous paintings,, Stańczyk”. He was only 24 years old. In 1864 he married Teodora Giebułtowska. They had five children: Tadeusz, Helena, Beata, Jerzy and Regina. Teodora was closed in a psychiatric hospital. Jan Matejko painted about 200 paintings... He died in Cracow in 1893.
