THE SHAKESPEAREAN SONNET

LEARNING TARGET  Students will be able to identify structure and the key elements of a Shakespearean sonnet.

WHAT IS A SONNET?  A sonnet has 14 lines  Common themes are love, beauty, politics, and morality  Written in iambic pentameter  It has three quatrains and a concluding couplet

QUATRAIN  Four lines of poetry, usually with alternating rhyme A sonnet has 3 quatrains Example: My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun, Coral is far more red, than her lips red, If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun: If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head:

SONNET 130 My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun, Coral is far more red, than her lips red, If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun: If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head: I have seen roses damasked, red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks, And in some perfumes is there more delight, Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. I love to hear her speak, yet well I know, That music hath a far more pleasing sound: I grant I never saw a goddess go, My mistress when she walks treads on the ground. And yet by heaven I think my love as rare, As any she belied with false compare.

VOLTA AKA “THE TURN”  Volta/The Turn: The dramatic change or shift in thought or emotion in a sonnet.  Usually indicated by words such as “but,” “yet,” or “and yet” and often occurs near the concluding couplet

YOUR JOB  Write one quatrain of a sonnet. Your quatrain should be 4 lines long, have 10 syllables per line, and have an A-B-A-B rhyme scheme.  Want some extra credit? Write a whole 14 line sonnet!  Example Quatrain: My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun, Coral is far more red, than her lips red, If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun: If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head:

YOUR JOB (HONORS)  Write a sonnet!  Your sonnet should be 14 lines long, have no more than 10 syllables per line, include 3 quatrains and a couplet, and follow the appropriate sonnet Rhyme Scheme a-b-a-b-c-d-c-d-e-f-e-f-g-g

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING  By a show of fingers, 1-5, how many lines form a quatrain?  And how many quatrains are there in a sonnet?  By a show of fingers, 1-5, how many lines form a couplet?  And how many couplets in a sonnet?  Fist to 5 on overall understanding of the structural elements of a sonnet, fist meaning I do not understand and 5 meaning I totally get it and can teach my friends.
