Chinatown

History of Chinatown Chinese arrived to Chicago in the 1870’s due to the work force needed to complete the transcontinental railroad. After this was done, the Chinese spread out to the western states of the Pacific coast. During these times, the Chinese were being oppressed and were not allowed to further expand, making them turn to other states. This is was what lead the Chinese to settle in Chicago. The person to be considered Chinatown’s first pioneer was called Mr. T C. Moy, who found that Chicago was more agreeable about having Chinese people in As time passed by, the population grew more and more, and Chinatown started to develop itself to what it is now; a town home to the Chinese community. The community in this town first settled in the Van Buren and Clark streets, but later on had to move to Cermak and Wentworth Avenue due to high raises in the rent.
