Autumn Images Emily Mynheer

Gathering (1995) – Masae Bamba This image caught my eye and reminded me of autumn through the colour and shapes of the objects used. Before researching, when looking at the images I noticed how pumpkin- like the shapes in the piece of art were; this reminds me of autumn because pumpkins are obviously seasonally grown around this time, and are also linked to Halloween which takes place at the end of October. After research, I discovered that Bamba, the artist, claimed she wanted to make artwork that didn’t fit into any particular category. It explained how she used traditional shibori dyeing techniques.

Rites of Spring (1987) This image made me think of autumn simply because of the colours used. The reds, browns and oranges automatically give off a very autumnal theme, leading the viewer to automatically think of the season. The shapes also reminded me of leaves, along with the textures which appear to be crunchy and ruffled as dead leaves falling from the tree’s would do.

Rayon Twill (1964) This image made me think of autumn, again, because of the colour scheme. The browns, reds and yellow are all colours which remind me of and are commonly linked with Autumn. The patterns also remind me of the ground during this season; the shapes remind me of leaves slightly, and the way they are scattered around makes me think of leaves when they fall straight from the trees.

Dreamy Improvisation (1913) – Wassily Kandinsky This image remind me of autumn, again because of the colours, and with the patterns used. I liked it generally because of how randomly it has been put together, and how other colours stand out from the others. Similar to the image I chose prior to this, this reminds me of autumn because of the way the different shapes are thrown together, reminding me slightly of when leaves fall from the trees and onto the ground, in totally random patterns. After research I also discovered that this artwork was improvised, which lead me to like it even more.

Shells and Marine Horses (1925) – Bianchini Férier Similar to the other images, the colours remind me of autumn. This is because the orange really stood out to me, but the dusky pink in the background also reminded me in the sunset; because the clocks change, the sun sets earlier, so its easier to see the sunset; this reminds me of that.
