Parallel Structure
When you join equal/related ideas in one sentence, express them in a similar way. Balance the structure of sentence parts. For example: – balance adjective w/ adjective – balance phrase w/ phrase – Balance clause w/ clause
NOT PARALLEL: He learned three things: shooting, passing, and how to dribble. Parallel: He learned three things: shooting, passing, and dribbling.
NOT PARALLEL: A good coach must learn to communicate with players, to organize a schedule, and adversity. PARALLEL: A good coach must learn to communicate with players, organize a schedule, and handle adversity.
NOT PARALLEL: My sister decided that she would study coaching techniques and to work with the youth basketball league. PARALLEL: My sister decided that she would study coaching techniques and work with the youth basketball league.
