Written Response May 12th There is a quote that “Humans depend on trees and trees depend on humans”. Explain what this quote means by explaining what we have learned about this year in science related to plants. Brainstorm first, then construct your sentences.

Written Response May 12th The quote “Humans depend on trees and trees depend on humans” can be explained through photosynthesis in plants and cellular respiration in humans. Plants conduct photosynthesis by capturing energy from the sun. This allows plants to make their own food and in turn release oxygen. Humans take in oxygen and break down stored food through cellular respiration. This process provides humans with energy and in turn release carbon dioxide. In summary, plants take in carbon dioxide yet release oxygen while humans release carbon dioxide and take in oxygen.

Add to alphabet book….. Atmosphere: thin layer of gas surrounding the Earth Composition: 78% nitrogen 21% oxygen 1% mixture of gases like argon & carbon dioxide

Add to alphabet book….. Earth has 4 layers with different densities Density increases as you move from the crust towards the center of the Earth Least dense = crust Most dense = inner core

Remember…. Theory of Plate Tectonics: theory that Earth's outer layer is made up of plates which have moved throughout the Earth's history. The theory explains how and why mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes occurs as well as how similar animals could have lived at the same time on what are now widely separated continents. 225 million years ago all the major continents formed one giant supercontinent, called Pangaea.

Video on Alfred Wegener rao rao

Add to alphabet book….. Tectonic Plates: Earth’s crust divided into 12 tectonic plates Plates move about 2 inches per year (5 centimeters) Convective currents within the mantle cause the plates to move

What is convection? G8 G8 Mws Mws

Add to alphabet book….. Plate boundaries can cause: – Earthquakes – Volcanic Eruptions – Mountain Building

Convection currents in the earth G8 G8

Add to alphabet book….. Convergent boundary = Press against one another Divergent boundary = Pull apart from one another Transform Boundary = Scrape against one another

Add to alphabet book….. Mountain ranges are being formed where 1.two continental plates press against one another 2.An oceanic plate and a continental plate press against one another

Add to alphabet book….. Mid- Ocean Rift Zones: where new sea floor is created; oceanic plates spread outward

Add to alphabet book….. Seismologists: scientists who study how wave energy travels through the different layers of the Earth

Add to alphabet book….. Seismic waves: energy released during earthquakes into the Earth: -Primary waves = fastest -Secondary waves = second fastest -Surface waves = slowest

Add to alphabet book….. Surface waves = most damage because they travel the slowest

Types of earthquake waves Types Of Earthquake Waves

Video Mid ocean ridge explanation with Bill Nye a4 a4

Add to alphabet book….. Pacific Ring of Fire : an extremely active region: Contains nearly 90% of the world’s earthquakes Contains over 450 volcanoes
