Objectives To provide information on the district’s procedure for school naming To outline steps for gathering community input for the proposal to rename Lee Elementary Options Keep the current name as Robert E. Lee Maintain the surname of Lee and select another first name Maintain the surname only – “Meaning” – Change the full name

Background Lee Elementary School opened in 1959, and historical records indicate the reason for naming it after Robert E. Lee was his history as an “American soldier & educator” SB 539 Update If signed, would have prohibited the use of an elected leader or senior military officer of the Confederate States of America to name state or local property. Governor did not sign - …Existing local processes provide for the naming or re-naming of public facilities …”

Timeline October 23 Community Forum Overview, information on procedure and current status, outline of community engagement strategies and tactics December 2 Report on results of the survey data Discussion of results and next steps January – April (2016) If survey responses and gathered feedback shows 2/3 majority in favor of a renaming, then; Supt. appoints members to School Names Committee to fill vacancies and ensure membership complies with AP 3300 School Names Committee convenes to review community input and provides recommendation to the Board Board of Education approval required for renaming
