Unit Price 6 th Grade Math 6.RP.2 I can find the unit rates of items to determine which is the better buy.
What is Unit Rate? Unit rate (sometimes called unit price) is the cost of one unit of measure of an item. Unit rate is often used in a grocery store to compare the price of two or more brands of the same item.
How do we determine Unit Rates and why is it important? Watch the videos to find out!
Example Find the Unit Price if an 8oz can of Campbell’s soup costs $1.19 $1.19 (divide) ÷ 8 = Since this is money - round to the hundredths place 0.15¢ per oz
Example Find the Unit Cost when a 24 Oz Box of Lucky Charms costs $3.99 $3.99 (divide) ÷ 24 = Round 0.17¢ per oz
Example Find the Unit Cost if an 8 pack of Capri Sun costs $ ¢ per juice
TRY!!! Find the Unit Cost if a 10 oz bottle of Baby Shampoo Costs $ ¢ per oz
Comparing Unit Prices Sometimes, we want to compare the unit prices of two different items. When doing this we are looking for the “Best Buy” “Better Value”
To Compare To compare unit prices we must: Find the unit price of each item separately Choose the item with the LOWER unit price
What is the better value? A 12 oz can of Campbell’s Tomato Soup for $0.99, or a 10 oz can of Heinz Tomato Soup for $0.89? Unit Price 0.99 ÷ 12 = or 0.08¢ per oz Unit Price 0.89 ÷ 12 = … or 0.07¢ per oz The better buy is the Heinz since 0.07¢ is less than 0.08 ¢
Your Turn!! What is the better value? A 12 pack of pop- tarts for $2.99 or an 8 pack of pop-tarts for $2.19? 2.99 ÷ 12 = ÷ 8 = 0.27 The 12 pack is the better value!
One More - Which is the better value? A 20 oz bottle of ketchup for $2.19 or a 32 oz. bottle of ketchup for $3.59? 2.19 ÷ 20 = ÷ 32 = The 20 oz bottle is the better value!
