History The city's roots are traced to the winter of 1879, when a group of miners ignored pleas by Frederick Pitkin, governor of Colorado, to return across the Continental Divide due to an uprising of the Ute Indians. Originally named Ute City, the small community was renamed Aspen in 1880, and, in its peak production years of 1891 and 1892, surpassed Leadville as the United States' most productive silver-mining district

Interesting Events Wintersköl, Aspen's annual "toast to winter," dates back to a quiet January in 1951 when local Aspenites decided to celebrate Aspen's unique Nordic lifestyle with an eclectic weekend of festivities. The four day celebration features on-mountain activities, Soupsköl, a canine fashion show, winterfest, fireworks, and much more. Perhaps the quintessential Aspen experience, a ride up the Silver Queen Gondola to the top of Aspen Mountain is a must for every visitor. In winter, ride to the top to ski Ajax, snowshoe Richmond Ridge, or relax on the sun- drenched Sundeck. In summer, activities abound - hiking, disc golf, kids' games, concerts and more.
