The Endocrine System

Think… Pair… Share…  How does the body grow during adolescence?

Main function  This system includes various organs that work together to regulate body functions

2 main parts  Endocrine Glands – group of cells that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream  Hormones – chemical substances that help regulate many of your body’s functions.

The Master Gland: The Pituitary Gland!  This gland controls just about everything in the body!  Made up of 3 sections (lobes)  Looks like this!

 1. Anterior Lobe  Anterior means front  Produces the following hormones:  Growth hormone – stimulates body growth and development

 2. Intermediate Lobe  Intermediate means middle  Produces:  Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) – controls the color of your skin!

 3. Posterior Lobe  Posterior means rear  Produces:  Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) – controls balance of water in the body!

Now, how does the body deal with stress and emergencies? Answer: The Adrenal Glands!

 Adrenal Glands – help body deal with stress and respond to emergencies

So, how do I keep my Endocrine System healthy?  Directly related to your overall health  Eat balanced meals to get all nutrients  Sleep – get at least 8 hours  Regular P.A.  Schedule regular checkups with your doctor
