Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny. Mahatma Gandhi Beliefs, Habits, and Destiny

Habits make us more efficient: we don’t have to think about every choice we make. An efficient brain allows us to stop thinking about basic behaviors, such as walking or tying shoes, so we can devote energy to more creative pursuits. An efficient brain saves lives by making our heads smaller and childbirth easier. Habits: The Good News

When brains power down at the wrong moment, we don’t see a predator hiding in the bushes or a new way to solve a problem. Habits can also lead to problems: a rigid mindset can undermine our successes. Habits can prevent us from seeing life in a new way Habits: The Bad News

Pavlov’s Classic Conditioning

Are people much different?

How a Habit is Born

Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time. Mark Twain Can we change our habits?

The Monkey Business Illusion Awareness and mindfulness

Remember the Habit-Forming Cycle?

How can students change bad academic habits?

Breaking a Habit? 1.What do you (or your students) repeatedly DO, OR FAIL TO DO, that does not enhance your quality of life or even makes your life obviously worse? 2.What do you (or your students) repeatedly TELL YOURSELF that may be keeping you stuck, undermining your efforts to change certain aspects of your life that you are not happy with? The Groundhog Day Syndrome

The Paradox of Choice

Taking notes Going to the tutoring center Checking sources in research papers Showing your work in math problems Checking Facebook, phone, and finding other distractions Good and Bad Academic Habits

Is 13 x 7 really 28?????
