What is Typical? How do we describe what is “typical?” Teacher salaries… Home values… Pop, Soda, or Coke…

Use of the Term “Average” What do we mean when we refer to the “average points scored”? What do we mean when we refer to the “average points scored”? What do we mean when we refer to the “average monthly temperature”? What do we mean when we refer to the “average monthly temperature”?

Average Points per Game 19.2 PPG (11/27/07) after 14 games It’s as if he scored 19.2 points in each of the 14 games The average takes the sum of all points scored (269) and distributes them evenly into each game “bin” If he scored 19.2 points each game for 14 games, he would have scored a total of 269 points BACK

Average Monthly Temperature 67.8 o average temperature in May It’s as if the temperature was 67.8 o every day of the month The average takes the sum of all temperatures and distributes them evenly into each day “bin” Use 30-year averages Cottonwood, AZ BACK

Average Speed Average speed of 9.5 m/s It’s as if the runner ran at a constant speed of 9.5 m/s for entire race Different use of ‘average’ due to covarying quantities But, there is a “leveling” of speeds similar to points or temperatures BACK
