Today we will manipulate very large and very small numbers. Manipulate=work with very large numbers – numbers in the millions or higher; have 7 or more digits very small numbers - numbers in the thousandths or smaller; thousandths are fractional parts of 1000

Standard form – A number written with one digit for each place value

Word form – A number written in words. One hundred twenty-three thousand, seven hundred eighty-nine

Expanded form – A way to write numbers that shows the place value of each digit. 100,000 + 20,000 + 3,000 + 700 + 9 = 123, 709

Review Numbers are divided into periods Thousands Ones 690,492 Periods are separated by commas.

Before you can learn to write numbers in word form you must know how to spell these words: one eight fifteen forty two nine sixteen fifty three ten seventeen sixty four eleven eighteen seventy five twelve nineteen eighty six thirteen twenty ninety seven fourteen thirty hundred thousand million

Tip Do not use “and” when writing whole numbers. The word “and” will be used when you are reading numbers with decimals. 690,492 Six hundred and ninety-thousand, and four hundred and ninety-two.

How to write large numbers in word form Write the numbers as you would read them: 1st Start with the period farthest to the left and write it in word form. 2nd Continue with the period to the right and write it in word form.
