Duties and Responsibilities of Floor Moppers

Moppers are for SAFETY Assure that the playing surface is not slippery Maintain the normal flow of the match to avoid having the players wipe the court themselves

Duties before the match May assist ball retrievers during official warmup, retrieving and giving balls to players May also be flag bearers (other briefing) Before the presentation of teams, court assistants will be presented

Report to designated area before the start of the protocol. March near banners at end of court then turn and march onto middle of court March straight back to banners at end of court and then every other person goes left and right. Final position for ball retrieving during warm-ups Court Assistants Presentation

Mopper Positions Three moppers with long handled mops near each warm-up area – one of those is also a quick mopper. Two quick moppers behind the Second Referee All quick moppers have towels – those behind Second Referee should wear knee pads.

Moppers’ Duties Be in front of scorer’s table 1 minute before end of warm-ups Mop playing court and service area: After warm-up before start of match During technical time-outs During set intervals Mop playing court only: During time-outs

Three Moppers work as a unit

Start with front zone Step over mop and across front zone again Make turn and go across again This would be the middle third of the court Make turn and go across again This would be the last third of the court For Service area make another turn and continue mopping across service area two more times.

Three Moppers work as a unit

Both sides should start at same time and try to stay in sync throughout If one group gets ahead of the other, wait on sideline until other group is ready to make the next pass across the floor Do NOT pick up your mop during entire mopping procedure

Quick Mopper Duties Quick moppers must see when floor becomes wet – any time a player falls to the floor or drips on the floor Acknowledge wet spot by raising hand Go to the wet spot, mop quickly and thoroughly and return in 6 to 8 seconds If wet spot is in front court near first referee, wipe then stay behind first referee for one rally and return.

Quick Mopper Duties Quick moppers must be assertive and go whenever there is a possibility of a wet spot. Moppers do NOT take direction from the players or coaches. Moppers act on their own initiative or on direction of the referees.

Quick Mopper Responsibilities Quick moppers behind Second Referee – responsible for front zones. Quick moppers near warm-up area – responsible for back zones. If wet spot is large, or there is more than one wet spot, assist each other.
