Can you think of a tool that is used to measure weather? What are tools? Can you think of a tool that is used to measure weather?

WEATHER the state of the atmosphere at a place and time

Temperature How hot or cold it is Thermometers have different scales A thermometer is a tool used to measure temperature Thermometers have different scales We measure in Fahrenheit!

Air Pressure The weight of air pushing on the earth’s atmosphere A barometer is a tool used to measure air pressure Think: Barbell= weightlifting Bar= weight of air

Wind The movement of air from an area of high pressure to low pressure Anemometer used to measure the wind speed Think: Ants= move fast Anemometer= how fast wind is moving

Wind Vane A tool used to measure the DIRECTION of the wind The arrow points in the direction from which the wind is blowing Think: wind vane = rooster on roof!

Wind Sock A wind sock is used to indicate wind direction and relative wind speed. They are typically used at airports and at chemical plants where there is a risk of gas leakage, or along a windy highway. Wind direction is the opposite direction that the sock is pointing. ex) A sock pointing straight north indicates a south wind.

Precipitation Water that falls from the sky Rain gauge used to measure the amount of rainfall

HUMIDITY Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. Hygrometer is used to measure humidity

Mrs. Hartman plans to go out over the weekend on her new sailboat Mrs. Hartman plans to go out over the weekend on her new sailboat. First, she must know how fast the wind is blowing to see if it’s appropriate to sail. What instrument should she use?

ANEMOMETER!

Mrs. Lee wants to make sure that she dresses Baby Joseph correctly when she brings him to visit us. In order for her to know the temperature outside, what instrument should she use?

THERMOMETER!

Mr. Mitchell just bought a brand new kite and he is anxious to fly it Mr. Mitchell just bought a brand new kite and he is anxious to fly it. Before he flies it, he must know the DIRECTION of the wind. What instrument should he use?

WIND VANE!

A meteorologist observes some storm clouds outside A meteorologist observes some storm clouds outside. He speculates that there is LOW air pressure. What instrument should he use to determine the air pressure?

BAROMETER!

Ryan is working on his Science Fair project Ryan is working on his Science Fair project. He plans to measure the amount of rainfall that has fallen in his neighborhood over the past two weeks. What instrument should he use?

RAIN GAUGE!
