Session 4 Using instruments and measures: ACTUALLY USE THEM TODAY Review cut sheets and operations manuals first

Measures Two types of measurement – 1 Single point in time and one observation – 2 Over time in specific units of time, seconds, minutes, hours days, months years….

Temperature Degrees F Degrees C Btu Change Δ in temperature F Change Δ in temperature C HOBO – portable instrument to measure temperature over time and can be downloaded to a spreadsheet to detect variations Demonstration

Humidity Relative humidity is measures is a percent of saturation in the air. The HOBO can measure relative humidity over time and information can be downloaded to a spreadsheet. The time series data can tell you about general conditions as well as unusual patterns in the distribution Demonstration

Light Lumens Foot Candles Some are point in time and more expensive instruments can record over time. More sophisticated models can render light quality – Demonstration

Electricity Volt, Ohm Meter (VOM) measures amperage too – also called multi-meter Amp-probe – clamp-on is most common Watt Meters are good for residential audits Demonstration

Movement of Air Cubic Feet Per Minute (CFM) Static pressure is a measure of the internal pressure acting on the inner surfaces and objects (like sensors) inside the duct or plenum. Blower doors and duct blasters detect leakage but most often they can be felt, heard or even smoke tested. Demonstration

Heat Infrared Technology Measures heat and heat transfer (losses) Color temperature rendering that can be recorded and downloaded for reports and presentations Demonstration
