Renal osteodystrophy By Al hanouf Althaydi

Definition and incidince Renal osteodystrophy is a bone disease that occurs when your kidneys fail to maintain the proper levels of calcium and phosphorus in your blood In 90 % of dialysis patients.

Signs and symptoms may exhibit no symptoms, if it does show symptoms, they include: Bone pain Joint pain Bone deformation specially in children Bone fracture

Diagnosis Decreased ca level Decreased calcitriol level Increased p level Increased PTH level

X-ray : Chondrocalcinosis at the knees and pupic symphysis. Osteopenia Bone fractures Bone deformation

Chondrocalcinosis

Treatment : Control PTH level

Diet Increase ca intake Decrease p intake.

Medication : Ca. Vit D. Calcitriol pills or injection. Phosphate binders such as : Calcium carbonate and calcium acetate. cinacalcet hydrochloride (Imitating ca ).

Dialysis treatment

Surgical removal of PTG

Renal transplant

Prognosis : Recovery from renal osteodystrophy has been observed post renal transplantation. Renal osteodystrophy is a chronic condition with a conventional hemodialysis schedule.
