Accelerator Safety Workshop SLAC Scott L. Davis Accelerator Safety Program Manager – SC Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy DOE 420.2C Order Revision Perspective and Process August 17-19, 2010 OFFICE OF SCIENCE

2 Accelerator Safety Order Revision Process Perspective: DOE’s Deputy Secretary Safety Reform Initiative - required the review of all safety and health related directives  DOE Order 420.2B “Safety of Accelerator Facilities” was last approved in 2004  Order revision needed to included; 1) clarify approval authorities, 2) eliminate duplication of requirements and 3) improve implementation/operations. Purpose: Update the Order, Start Dialogue on needed changes and bring together a group of Accelerator Safety Experts to begin the process (Chicago Lock-In, May 2010) Guiding Priorities:  Ensure the revised Order is consistent with DOE Order 251.1C  Includes the issues identified in the recent Position Paper  Consistent with the Deputy Secretaries Reform Initiative  Provides the Accelerator Safety community with the guidance needed to continue to operate our facilities safely and efficiently

3 Theme for the “Lock-In”  You may not get everything you wanted but you should get everything you need  Outcomes and Priorities  Leave with a general consensus that the product is acceptable to the SC Accelerator community –Reasonable –Tasking is to go back and coordinate ideas and comments with our line management and colleagues  Each Break Out Group work to develop a Section with general consensus of the group. –Remaining issues highlighted/captured and given to the group lead (Parking Lot)  Thursday Morning – “Draft” Order 80% Agreement –This is where our discussions on revisions will begin  Work directly with Breakout Group Leads to resolve comments & issues

Order Revision Schedule August to December
