CS 113 Welcome to Week 9 / Unit 9 Academic Strategies for Business Professionals Professor Margarita Apolinaris

Seminar Agenda Reminders Focus for the week Discussion What is due in Week 9 Case Study

Focus for the week Objective 1 Understand the importance of career action planning Objective 2 Complete the Unit 9 Project “Surround yourself only with people who are going to lift you higher.”

Discussion of the weekly materials In this unit, you will reflect upon information from course readings from Week 1 through 10 previous assignments career research the informational interview assignment LASSI assessment Be sure to use the resources in the Career Services area to help you. O*Net is also a powerful resource Carefully create a Career Action Plan (CAP) Take time to review previous work

Let’s Discuss! How do you think you will use: Time management Goal setting Self assessments Writing skills Reading skills note taking skills critical thinking skills career planning To complete your Career Action Plan?

You need to think about how this works

You are the captain of your own ship "Your brain shall be your servant instead of your master, You will rule it instead of allowing it to rule you." Charles E. Popplestone

Don’t Quit Author Unknown "When things go wrong as they sometimes will When the road you're trudging seems all up hill. When funds are low and the debts are high. And you want to smile, but you have to sigh. When care is pressing you down a bit. Rest, if you must, but don't you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns. As everyone of us sometimes learns. And many a failure turns about When he might have won had he stuck it out: Don't give up though the pace seems slow – You may succeed with another blow. Success is failure turned inside out – The silver tint of the clouds of doubt. And you never can tell how close you are. It may be near when it seems so far: So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit It's when things seem worst that you must not QUIT.

Let’s talk about your interview How did it go for you? How did you prepare for it? What would you do differently if you had the chance to do it again? What value did you gain?

Hopefully the interview: Provided you with insight about a career you are interested in Expanded your network Included detailed answers for most of the questions. If the interviewee was not detailed, then they were encouraged to give more. If you had holes, you may be able to call back and ask more questions. Remember that this is for your benefit, so make sure the interview results added the insight that you needed to complete the CAP. If you need more information—call the person back and ask for it! Career Action Plan CAP

Unit 9 Project: Career Action Plan For your project this week, you will develop your own Career Action Plan based on information you have gained in this course.

Pay attention to each section Thoughtful note: Just because we set a minimum does not mean this is what you should do. That is for people who are only doing this because it is an assignment, rather than understanding the value of this activity. "No one ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him; it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above the required that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction." Charles Kendall Adams

Spend some time on this Dates include month, day, year ~ i.e. 12/31/2012
