Physical Social EmotionalIntelligence Thinking A persons behavior is connected to The Big 5 of Psychology

The scientific study of human and animal behavior.

Build a knowledge base by studying origins & causes of behavior (Biology, Development, Cognition, Personality) Tackles practical problems. (organizational problems, engineering, system building) Studies, assesses, and treats troubled people. Specializes in both psychotherapy and medicine.

Lying? Remember? Does this really work?

Human behavior is the product of powerful, inner forces that we are not always consciously aware of………THE UNCONSCIOUS !!

A “whole-life”, POSITIVE approach of studying human behavior by looking at a person’s whole life & it’s patterns. Our FEELINGS guide our choices.

Human behavior is based on what we learn and the environment we learn it from. Office Conditioning - YouTubeOffice Conditioning - YouTube (specific behavior) (Reward or Punishment) (environment) nE8pFWP5QDM

Human behavior is a result of our biological make-up.

Human behavior is an end result of thinking, and all processes of knowing.

Behavior is a result of the groups that we are a part of, and how we respond to the expectations of that group.

Human behavior is an ever-changing process, that leads us to adapt and overcome our environment.

Most important component of Nervous System Primarily responsible for autonomic processes. (heart rate, breathing, digestion) Involved with motivation, emotion, & memory processes. Sensory info. Movement, Abstract thinking, & reasoning The human “mind”

Motor control, decision- making, personality. Sensations – touch, pain Visual Information Hearing Information

Mental representations of the world Try to fit new objects in existing schemas Change the schema to fit the new object

Starts with…. Schemas involve body and sensation Child starts to use mental images or symbols to understand things. Child starts to use logical schemas, but understanding is limited to concrete objects Person can now solve abstract problems

High level cognition is apparent when we can use…

Abstract thinking leads to… A process where we explain an unpleasant emotion or behavior in a way that preserves self-esteem. I’m a jerk to people because it’s cool No one likes me because I’m too smart I had a rough week, I’m gonna get stoned

Common Teenage Cognitive Issues - Discover that adults aren’t perfect, & Let everyone know Practice building your own viewpoints by arguing against everything With many choices possible, teenagers struggle to decide. OVERTHINKING

Common Teenage Cognitive Issues Want the ideals, but have a hard time living up to them. Judge others harsher than their own actions Assume everybody is thinking of the same thing they are --- Themselves I’m Special, I’m Unique, I don’t follow the same rules as everyone else. I WILL LIVE FOREVER If everyone else was like me we wouldn’t have any problems in the world. ature=related

The sexual maturation of people. Lasts about 2-3 years Girls – years old Boys – years old Average age – 13

A condition of uneven growth or body maturation Social awkwardness Self-conscious – especially if early or late development Seek Conformity What if I don’t match social ideals?

- Wait for marriage - Gain experience & maturity - Get married right away Is society showing kids too much? Increase in promiscuity, but decrease in teenage pregnancies? Health Fear & Death Fear

Developmental Tasks - and accepting one’s gender and expectations - with peers of both sex, and with adults - most kids have a hard time admitting or discovering this

Developmental Tasks - Keywords are “socially” and “achieving” - Is this what dating is about?? - Can you flat out think well enough to survive/thrive?

Childhood/Adolescence Levinson’s theory of Social Development Early Adult Transition Enter Adult WorldJob and/or Family “30” CrisisChild Raising Settling Down Midlife Transition – Crisis? Empty Nest Syndrome 50’s TransitionMenopause Retirement Late Adult Transition Twilight

Idea that Physical & Mental decline is inevitable with old age. Prejudice or Discrimination against the elderly

Stages are typical, BUT NOT absolute. This can affect person or people close to them. This isn’t happening. It’s not that bad. “Why Me?!?” Making deals & promises to prolong life. “Triggered” depression can cause lows & loss of energy and will. This is inevitable. Can happen in any order and length of level varies.
