Cal/Val for physics MED-MFC internal meeting CMCC-INGV-SOCIB Lecce E. Clementi, INGV

ACTUAL INDEPENDENT INGV

ACTUAL INDEPENDENT INGV OVERVIEW In order to evaluate the quality of the Med-MFC product, a NRT validation system based on Class 4 diagnostics (model and observational data comparison) has been developed. Independent in-situ observations from 14 centers are daily downloaded operationally at INGV. Observations and corresponding model values are stored in a MySQL DataBase (DB) The evaluated statistics are: RMS and BIAS for model analysis and 3 rd day of forecast. The validated variables are: Temperature Salinity Sea Surface Height Current velocities Sea Surface Temperature Sea surface temperature is also compared with satellite data Comparison of observations and model value are made on-fly on a dedicated website communicating with the DB.

ACTUAL INDEPENDENT INGV The CalVal SW is based on the open source SW LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL Php) MySQL is a relational DB management system that runs as a server providing multi-user access to a number of database PhPMyAdmin is used as a frontend to produce dynamic webpages. The CalVal SW requires installation of NCAR Common Language (NCL) to work with NetCDF format and convert in CSV format to be processed by PHP The CalVal SW is flexible, the users can modify the DB (ex. add new sources) in relation to specific needs The NRT access to the in-situ observations was established by FTP protocols between INGV and partners in January 2010 Data are downloaded operationally every day since May 2010 Rolling archive: * 3-months for Med-MFC current analysis and forecasts data * 10-days for satellite SST data CalVal SoftWare

ACTUAL INDEPENDENT INGV CalVal daily routine FTP upload of observations File conversion to CSV format Update of insitu locations Retrive model values for in-situ and SST comparison Time aggregation of in-situ and satellite SST data Once the daily uploading/conversion procedure of in-situ, satellite and model data is completed, data are stored in a CSV table that populate the MySQL data base

ACTUAL INDEPENDENT INGV Run java script Update in-situ meta data Publication on the CalVal webpage CalVal daily routine When the daily update of MySQL DB is completed, a java script is run in order to update the CalVal web page and in-situ meta data are updated. Then Model-observations comparison are published in the webpage

NEW CAL/VAL FOR PHYSICS REQUEST FROM MERCATOR OCEAN: REQ GEN 8 In the framework of the PQWG coordinated by Mercator Océan the Contractor shall propose, develop and trial new metrics, applying them to the products. For metrics which are deemed useful, the results will be included in the product quality quarterly report. The Contractor shall perform the following tasks: · Propose, and develop new metrics · Trial metrics selected by Mercator Océan · Once individual metrics have been successfully trialed and are sufficiently mature: · Apply to reprocessed products · Every quarter, apply the best metrics to the last 3 months of operational products and transfer results to Mercator Océan, for publication in an agreed format (on the validation web site)

SOCIB subcontractor will provide glider measurements in the Ibiza Channel and develop the metrics to compare with the daily 10-day forecasts, calculating among other indices: - RMSE - BIAS - anomaly correlation coefficients. This metrics will be applied to both short-term dynamics (at weekly time scales using quasi Real Time data) and the longer term water masses variability (at monthly/seasonal time scales using Delayed Time glider data). Different forecast skill scores will be defined with respect to established climatologies and persistence. The algorithms will be first inserted in the Near Real Time existing web-based tool and later they will be adapted to the required format on the CMS Validation site. NEW CAL/VAL FOR PHYSICS The Consortium will critically analyze its available interactive and Near Real Time Cal/Val Web tool for analyses and 3-day forecasts done with independent data in order to propose the inclusion of this metrics and visualization in the CMS Validation site with the appropriate format, and will support its implementation at the central site. CONSORTIUM PROPOSAL SOCIB ACTIVITIES

NEW CAL/VAL FOR PHYSICS CONSORTIUM REQUEST TO SOCIB Information on the: availability of data geographycal coverage (horizontal and vertical) time coverage and frequency of acquisition file format data quality check parameters available for CalVal metrics that will be evaluated Define if the glider CalVal will be included in the actual CalVal SW developed at INGV Request from OGS for biogeochemistry: Do you plan to have bio sensors to the gliders (tipically for Nitrates and Chlorophyll measurements)
