WWII – A new kind of war ► Did not fight in trenches like WWI ► Moved quickly using tanks, ships, an airplanes ► Bombs dropped from air raids destroyed a lot and killed many ► War was fought over a larger area of land ► WWII had two major fronts – battle lines 1. Africa and Europe 2. Pacific Ocean

War in Africa and Europe ► Allies wanted control of the Mediterranean Sea and to invade Italy ► Allies won North Africa in may 1943 ► 1944 Allies captured Rome ► June 6, 1944 largest water-to-land invasion in history (Allied forces) D-day – the Allies invaded Normandy Allies broke through German lines

The Holocaust ► Hitler with his Nazis blamed the jews for Germany’s economic problems ► He was using concentration camps ► Hitler made life VERY difficult for Jews ► Hitlers “final solution to the Jewish question” was a campaign of mass murder against all European Jews and other “undesirables” The Holocaust ► ► Anne Frank wrote a diary about her days during this time.

A Changed World ► Soviet Union set up a communist government Communism – is a system in which all property is owned by the government ► US helped countries fight the spread of communism by giving them military and economic help ► US and its allies became known as the free world

The Cold War ► Free world vs. communist nations ► The hostility became known as the Cold War Cold War – a war fought with propaganda and money rather than with soldiers and weapons ► This Cold War shaped world events for most of the second have of the 1900s.
