REC Estonia Role of REC Estonia in the project “Baltic Sea Challenge – Cities for the Healthier Sea”: Organising a knowledge based competition “The Baltic Sea in Changes”.

The Baltic Sea in Changes A goal of the competition was to attract public attention to the condition of the Baltic Sea - related changes and the need to protect the maritime environment. Young people of 16–18 from Finland, Latvia and Estonia were invited to participate as teams of 3–5 persons. The participants were asked to make 5 photos during 5 weeks + describe the changes in an essay. In order to meet this goal, a series of 5 photos and an explanatory essay composed. Photo art has been used as a tool of environmental education.

The Baltic Sea in Changes The main criterion was the content of the work: perception of changes, environmental protection aspects, potential risks and dangers to the Baltic Sea at the chosen spot, etc.

The Baltic Sea in Changes  37 groups from Finland, Estonia, and Latvia registered  22 groups submitted their works

Coastline and Reeds The WellyTeam Langinkosken lukio, Finland: “The Baltic Sea is the responsibility of each one of us and that is why this ecosystem should be kept unchanged.”

Changes in the Baltic Sea and its Shore Bulwark of Liepaja Ambers, Latvia: “...it is required to take appropriate action to reduce the pollution in the Baltic Sea, that is, to coordinate our behaviour and take all required actions to prevent pollution and the damage done by no one but ourselves...”

Workshop in Estonia The best team of each country was invited to a workshop on “Art and Environment”, which was held in Tallinn and on the island of Aegna on August th 2011.

What´s next? Distribution of the results of the competition. Encourage people to visit the web page. Establishment of public forum to the web page Use of camera as an educational tool of environmental education. Distribution of environmental information to each target group with appropriate tools.
