How to cater for the lower ability students at GCSE level The Entry Level Certificate in Spanish Carine Jacquel AST in MFL Hillview School for girls 2006

The entitlement to languages for all This specification has been designed to meet the needs of candidates who would be unlikely to achieve a GCSE grade. It is co- teachable with the OCR GCSE in Modern Foreign Languages and can be awarded at the end of a one or two year course of study. SCHEME OF ASSESSMENT A booklet of tests covering all ten topics is provided. A Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing test is provided for each of the ten topics. Teachers may test discrete skills and topics when their candidates are ready. Each test is discrete and is designed to be completed within normal lesson time. OCR specification

Why we decided to offer the course at Hillview? We felt that the GCSE format did not suit every girl we have in the school in terms of their interest and ability therefore we decided to offer three routes to them: one of which is the Entry level certificate, which enables even the lower ability students to obtain a qualification at GCSE level.

Our vocational status Hillview School for Girls is committed to providing a diverse and challenging curriculum for its learners that provides a variety of courses that support skills development, retention, achievement and progression of learners and that are ‘fit for purpose’. As part of this commitment the school offers a number of vocational strands to the curriculum including Entry Level Certificate in Languages
