About Team Handball Team handball is a team sport in which two teams (7 on each team) pass and bounce a ball on a court and try to throw it into another teams goal. Team handball is a fast pace sport and involves contact.

History and Origin The team handball we know today was formed in the early 19 th century in Northern Europe countries such as Denmark, Germany, Norway, and Sweden. Holger Nielsen, a Danish gym teacher, drew up the modern team handball rules and published them in It was not until 1926 a committee was put together to form international rules of handball that we play by today. They have a world championship tournament every 4 years in men’s and women’s.

Playing Field and Goals The court’s dimensions are 40 meters long by 20 meters wide with a goal on each end. Each goal has a rectangular clearance area of three meters in the width and two meters in the height. It must be securely bolted either to the floor or the wall behind. The goal and the cross bar must be made out of the same material which is usually wood or aluminum. The goal has thrThe three sides of the beams visible from the playing field must be painted alternatingly in two contrasting colors which both have to contrast against the background. The colors on both goals must be the same.ee sides and feature a quadratic cross section with a side of 8 cm. Each goal has a net.

Gameplay A standard time of play is 2 halves, 30 minutes long, and a ten minute halftime. Each team has only one timeout per half which is one minute in length. A handball match is led by two referees.

Players and Teams Each team has 7 players on the court 1 of them being a goal keeper and 7 substitutes. The goal keeper’s uniform will be of different color. Substitution may be done at anytime, and as many players at a time as the coach would like. Substitutions are made at the substitution line.

Field Players Field players can touch the ball with any part of their body knee up including the knee. A player that has possession of the ball can remain stationary for only three seconds. They can run three steps, pass, dribble, or shoot. Passing is the best way to move the ball although a player can dribble and retain possession as long as he/she likes.

Goal Keeper Only the goalkeeper is allowed move freely within the goal perimeter, although he may not cross the goal perimeter line while carrying or dribbling the ball. When the goal keeper is in the zone, he can touch the ball with any part of his body including feet. The zone is the goal perimeter, which is a semi-circle line on the court 6 meters from the goal. The goal keeper may also participate with the field players.

The Ball The ball is spherical and must either be made of leather or a synthetic material. It is intended to be controlled with only one hand The men’s ball is 58 cm in circumference and weighs 425 grams. The women’s ball is 54 cm in circumference and weighs 325 grams. Most youth balls are 50 cm in circumference and weigh about 290 grams.
