Overview of DT group activities in LHCb LHCb CERN team retreat, Les Houches Burkhard Schmidt, PH-DT January 13, 2016

EP-DT Goals 1.Support the various experiments at CERN in their operation 2.Participate and take leading roles in detector upgrade programmes during the development, design, construction, installation phases through generic R&D detector collaborations or direct participation in projects – Direct contributing to detector construction projects where the complexity, production time and cost in industry would be too high, or the technology does not yet have a sufficient industrial base 3.Provide centralized resources and expertise, in terms of personnel and facilities, for development of future detector technologies, explore trends and have a strong R&D programme in detector technologies – Provide an integral approach for detector design and technical support at all phases of the projects; R&D, prototyping, construction and operation – Retain and develop knowhow 2

The CO section expertise is mechanics for particle detectors, including know-how in detector design, prototyping, production, detector assembly, integration and testing. It represents the technical backbone of the group intervening and supporting through various detector projects the construction and operation of CERN experiments. Detector Construction & Operations (DT-CO) EP-DT Detector Technologies The EO section is in charge of mechanical design activities for CERN detector-related projects. Designers and engineers cover a wide range of disciplines in mechanical engineering, construction, and numerical simulation fields. Engineering Office (DT-EO) Detector Development (DT-DD) The FS section develops, maintain and operates gas and cooling systems for particle detectors. The service is available to all experiments at CERN. It offers a coherent, ready-to- use deliverable, M&O support, advice and consultancy. Fluidic Systems (DT-FS) Engineering Facilities (DT-EF) The EF section develops and maintains technology expertise and facilities for particle detector prototyping and contributes to small scale parts productions for CERN experiments. Facilities/shops are used to develop parts, prototypes, and conduct validation experiments in support of the group and projects. Technology & Physics (DT-TP) The DI section develops and supports large and medium scale control and DAQ systems for the infrastructure of CERN experiments and laboratory control systems. Detector Interface (DT-DI) Contact Persons for Experiments and Projects Projects Services The TP section promotes and manages projects on detector construction, integration and operation. Pool of project leaders that plans and coordinates projects - established in collaboration with the experiments- across different functional areas. The DD section leads R&D projects in several detector technologies, and runs related detector R&D facilities open to all users. Facilities: Gas Lab, Silicon Lab, QART, BondLab, DSF, Irradiation Facilities.

Project contribution of DT to LHCb 10 colleagues (7.6 FTEs), working on a variety of projects About 80% of the contributions are upgrade oriented Collaboration with LBD/LBO groups is working well – which is mandatory. 5

VELO CERN responsibilities: General engineering and technical support Hood design and integration of the safety system for the CO 2 micro-channel cooling. Test beam support. Integration and installation of the upgraded VELO detector  More on Friday by Paula 6

Integration work for the UT CERN responsibilities : – The UT box, including the beam pipe interface A solution providing thermal protection is needed, which is also light and air ‘tight’ and which provide a dry-air atmosphere and electrical shielding to the outside. – The frame, on which the UT staves will be mounted providing the stave support – The overall integration in LHCb, including cable chains, electronic racks bring out the huge amount of cables to the area of the peripheral electronics (data-concentrator boards) Present TT 7  An EDR for the box and frames is scheduled for spring this year

CO 2 Cooling for the LHCb upgrade Two CO 2 cooling plants with a cooling power of about 7kW are needed for the VELO and UT detectors in the LHCb upgrade. Special features: – Micro-channel cooling for VELO – long vertical evaporators for UT – Redundancy approach à la CMS Pixel An EDR for the CO2 cooling system has been carried out in December – Work has been carried out in close collaboration between the detector experts and the DT-cooling team for the preparation of the EDR – 3D design is starting and preparation for the PRR starting now – Project management is now taken over by the DT C0 2 cooling service – Work-package has been prepared 8

Muon System upgrade: Shielding  An EDR is schedules for spring this year  Early installation (EYETS 2016/2017) for the beam-plug under M2 is considered. The 2 nd Muon station is not sufficiently protected from background hits – insufficient thickness (λ i ) of HCAL – showers in the material close to the beam-pipe Simulations have been done to investigate the reduction in occupancy in M2R1: – Change of material from steel (or lead) to tungsten for HCAL and M2 beam-plug – Additional shielding behind HCAL (replace PMT and CW bases by shielding) – Max. possible reduction: -60% -22% (M2 plug) -25%-43% HCAL plug: -25% 11
