Free world vs Communism The Cold War Free world vs Communism

Do Now: What are some rivalries you know about? List a few

Berlin Wall You are now divided as were the Germans and Europe. Those in the EAST are under Communist control. You cannot have contact with those in WESTERN Europe. WESTERN Europe is democratic, and life is better. America supports you. Families, friends, husbands and wives, were separated. The only chance of contacting your loved one was through waving. Question: What would you do?

What would have happened to you? 1. Try to jump the wall or climb it- You were shot at. Most likely you got hit and were injured or died 2. Dig a tunnel-got caught, you were machine-gunned to death 3. One guy tried to flee East Berlin in a balloon, shot down and killed At least 100,000 jailed for trying to escape East Berlin. 268 known murders

Cold War War of tensions and conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States 1945-1991 Two nations become rivals- competing to be the world’s superpower Communism vs Democracy Turns “hot” with the Korean War and Vietnam

Question for you What did the US think of the USSR and Stalin? What did Stalin think of the USA and Truman? What did they say about each other’s government?

Government- Which is better? Communism or Democracy? The Soviet “Iron Curtain” over EASTERN Europe (Communism) WESTERN EUROPE is more DEMOCRATIC. Germany is divided into two countries and Berlin is divided *

Space Race- USSR makes it first to space, USA to the moon Sputnik- orbited into space around the Earth in 1957 Apollo 11- July 1969

Nuclear Age- Who has better missiles, bombs, and military might? Soviets test H-Bomb in 1949

Espionage- USSR and USA spy on one another U2 Spy Plane flown by Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the USSR. America was spying on the Soviets, which infuriated Nikita Khrushchev. Powers was suppose to be held prisoner for ten years in the USSR. Released after two years in exchange for a Soviet spy. The Rosenbergs- found guilty of giving US secrets on developing the H-Bomb to the Soviets. They were executed in 1953

Cuban Missile Crisis- USSR puts missiles in Cuba in case of American attack

Cold War turns “Hot” with the Korean War and Vietnam- Goal- try to “contain” Communism from spreading

Vietnam

The Olympics- 1980 The Miracle on Ice Watch at least the first 5 minutes of this clip. Sports, especially the Olympics, were a battleground of the Cold War.

1980’s Berlin Wall Falls November 9, 1989 Communism falls in the USSR in 1991 and control over other Eastern European countries ends.

Questions to Answer What is a superpower? What were some of the competitions the two sides engaged in? Do you think that spying is still going on today? 4. Research the term “Domino Theory” and explain how it connects to the wars we fought in Korea and Vietnam. 5. How would missiles in Cuba create a fear in the United States during this period of time?
