PART 1 KRISTI DUDEK NOVEMBER 16, 2015 The Standards for Mathematical Practice

THE STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE DESCRIBE VARIETIES OF EXPERTISE THAT MATHEMATICS EDUCATORS AT ALL LEVELS SHOULD SEEK TO DEVELOP IN THEIR STUDENTS. THESE PRACTICES REST ON IMPORTANT “PROCESSES AND PROFICIENCIES” WITH LONGSTANDING IMPORTANCE IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION. The Standards for Mathematical Practice

BY THE END OF THIS SESSION YOU WILL HAVE: *IDENTIFIED AND DISCUSSED THE 8 PRACTICES OF MATHEMATICS *RELATED THE 8 PRACTICES OF MATHEMATICS TO THE THREE PHASES OF INQUIRY *REVIEWED THE COMMONALITIES AMONG THE PRACTICES IN SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS AND LANGUAGE ARTS. Session Overview

TURN TO A PARTNER AND RECITE AS MANY OF THE STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE AS YOU CAN (WITHOUT CHEATING). Formative Assessment

Differentiated Practice JIGSAW ACTIVITY Groups of 8 people Each person becomes an expert on a chosen standard Individuals report out to their group Group members take notes for each standard Relate to the Phases of Inquiry NON-LINGUISTIC REPRESENTATIONS Choose a standard Create a non-linguistic representation (poster, skit, song, etc.) Present to the audience Audience members will determine which mathematical practice is being represented

INQUIRY STARTERS FOCUSED INVESTIGATION SHARED UNDERSTANDINGS The Standards for Mathematical Practice and the Phases of Inquiry

*IDENTIFIED AND DISCUSSED THE 8 PRACTICES OF MATHEMATICS *RELATED THE 8 PRACTICES OF MATHEMATICS TO THE THREE PHASES OF INQUIRY *REVIEWED THE COMMONALITIES AMONG THE PRACTICES IN SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS AND LANGUAGE ARTS. Session Overview

ON YOUR WAY HOME TONIGHT IDENTIFY AND DESCRIBE AT LEAST 6 OF THE 8 STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE. IF YOU ARE UNSUCCESSFUL, PLEASE SEE AN INTERVENTIONIST TOMORROW. Post Assessment (Self-Scored)
