May serve as an introduction, a summary, a counter-example, or to link the work to a bigger picture Look at the epigraph at the beginning of Ch. 8, on page 70. Why were these two quotes placed together? What is the common theme that Krakauer is trying to convey?
Chapter 8 Epigraphs ROSZAK Paraphrase Having the talent and desire to take on outrageous acts doesn’t always mean that one should take those risks. Relationship to Chapter McCandless’s journey was meaningful to him, but pain overwhelmed the thought process HOAGLAND Paraphrase It is beneficial to travel in the woods. It helps heal your wounds and clear your mind. However, Alaska is not the best place to take that trip. The terrain and conditions are too harsh. Relationship to Chapter Alex couldn’t handle the extreme conditions of Alaska. He should have gone to somewhere easier to navigate.

Many Alaskans expressed strongly NEGATIVE opinions Letters received by Krakauer: “Alex is a nut…” “Krakauer is a kook if he doesn’t think Chris ‘Alexander Supertramp’ McCandless was a kook.” “His ignorance, which could have been cured by a USGS quadrant and a Boy Scout manual, is what killed him.” Do you agree with those reactions?
