Can’t I just google it? Google versus INFOhio’s Databases Trish Baker Media Resource Coordinator/INFOhio ICoach pbaker@laca.org

Use Google when you need: Entertainment Phone numbers or address Quick Facts Shopping Sports News Travel information Weather

Why not use Google for College research? Google cannot guarantee the accuracy of an article or if a web site is reliable. Google is not organized to meet academic standards. Many web sites are biased due to self-publication or because they want to sell you something. Most of the open web does not lead to in-depth information. Because Google is commercial, it takes more time to examine. Web sites can come and go. Because of copyright, many articles published in scholarly journals are not available through Google or Google Scholar.

Why are research databases better than the open web? Library Databases provide: Free access to students More advanced databases Accurate, reliable resources suitable for academic assignments Full text scholarly and primary sources College instructors have requirements that require sources other than the web.

So, what is a “Scholarly Journal?” Identifying Scholarly Resources
