FISHERIES By: Brian Klembara

What is a fishery? A fishery is an area with a large population of valuable ocean organisms. They are valuable renewable resources. 70 percent of major fisheries have been over fished.

How can they be managed? They manage fisheries by setting fishing limits, changing fishing methods, developing aquaculture techniques, and finding new resources.

What is commercial fishing? Commercial fishing is catching fish or other seafood for commercial profit. They usually catch them from wild fisheries. What equipment is used? Trawl bags, longlines, drift nets, and Purse - seine lines are used in commercial fishing.

What is aquaculture? Aquaculture is the practice of raising fish and other water-dwelling organisms for food. The fish are raised in artificial ponds or bays. However the artificial ponds and bay can replace natural habitats. It can also cause pollution and spread diseases into wild fish populations.

Where are they at? Some of the major fisheries are in the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, Georges Bank off New England, and Monterey Canyon off California.

What is overfishing? Overfishing is when a habitat is fished so much the fish are starting to die out. Laws have made fishing limits to make sure areas aren’t overfished.

What types of fisheries are there? There are different kinds of fisheries. Some are natural fisheries and artificial fisheries.
