Doing ethnography in ‘deviant’ subcultures

Class discussion This PowerPoint can be used alongside Tanya Bunsell’s article — Doing ethnography in ‘deviant’ subcultures — on p. 10 of this issue of the magazine. The subject matter of Bunsell’s research — the world of female bodybuilders — raises some important issues surrounding gender and what are considered to be acceptable ways of ‘doing gender’. Something that should get a lively class discussion going is to compare photos of female bodybuilders with photos of females of a more conventional female appearance. The photos on the following four slides can be used as the basis for a discussion on images of gender.
