Chapter 17.5 Gene expression and Mutations
Mutation and DNA Mutation = change(s) in the nucleotide/base sequence of DNA; may occur due to errors in DNA replication or due to the impacts of chemicals.

Mutations.
GENE REGULATION Gene regulation: The ability of an organism to control which genes are transcribed in response to the environment.
Introduction A mutation is a change in the normal DNA sequence. They are usually neutral, having no effect on the fitness of the organism. Sometimes,

Mutations in DNA changes in the DNA sequence that can be inherited can have negative effects (a faulty gene for a trans- membrane protein leads to cystic.
Genes and Gene Mutations. Gene: a sequence of DNA bases that code for a product, usually a protein. Gene mutation: a change in the sequence of bases.
MUTATIONS. Mutations are heritable changes in genetic information Only mutation in the GAMETES can be passed on from generation to generation There can.
 During replication (in DNA), an error may be made that causes changes in the mRNA and proteins made from that part of the DNA  These errors or changes.
Ch. 9.7 Mutations Every once in a while, cells make mistakes in copying their own DNA An incorrect base can be inserted or sometimes a base is skipped.

UNIT: DNA and RNA What is a mutation and how does it cause changes in organisms?  Mutations -changes in a single base pair in DNA=changes in the nucleotide.
Mutations changes in the DNA sequence that can be inherited
Entry Task Apply: Suppose a template strand of DNA had the following sequence: DNA: T A C G G A T A A C T A C C G G G T A T T C A A What would.
Mutations (Section 17-5) Now, that you know how gene expression works, let’s see how changes in the gene affect how the protein is made.
UNIT: DNA and RNA What is a mutation and how does it cause changes in organisms?  Mutations Alternative alleles (traits) of many genes result from changes.

Mutations. Mutations Let’s quickly review from last class… Two major types of mutations: gene mutations and chromosomal mutations One we’re focusing.
Mutations Any change in an organism’s DNA. Mutations in somatic cells only impact individual; mutations in gametes may impact offspring. 2 Types: A. Gene.

Point Mutations Silent Missense Nonsense Frameshift

Point Mutations A change in a single base pair within the DNA. – Transition = a pyrimidine changing to another pyrimidine (or purine to purine) – Transversion = a purine changing to a pyrimidine ( or vise –versa)

Silent Mutation Does not alter the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide even though the nucleotide sequence has changed.

Missense Mutations Base substitutions in which an amino acid change does occur. – Example : sickle-cell anemia.

Nonsense Mutations Involves a change from a normal codon that codes for a amino acid to a stop codon.

Frame-shift Mutations Involves the addition or deletion of a number of nucleotides that is not divisible by 3. Causes the sequence to shift to the right or left.
