FACILITY MAINTENANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS OF STRENGTH TRAINING AND CONDITIONING CHAPTER 26

FACILITY MAINTENANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT MAINTAINING AND CLEANING SURFACES Flooring – wood, tile, rubber, interlocking mats, carpet – all areas must be kept cleaned and secure. Vertical surfaces – walls, mirrors, windows – areas must be replaced if cracks appear. Ceilings – all fixtures must be cleaned on a regular basis.

FACILITY MAINTENANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT Litigation issues Risk management is the employment of strategies to decrease and control the risk of injury from athletic participation and, therefore, the risk of liability exposure. Common legal terminology Liability – a legal responsibility, duty, or obligation. Standard of care – what a reasonable and prudent person would do under similar circumstances.

FACILITY MAINTENANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT Negligence – failure to act as reasonable and prudent person would under similar circumstances. Assumption of risk – knowing that an inherent risk exists with participation in an activity and voluntarily deciding to participate anyway.

FACILITY MAINTENANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT Supervision 1.Always be there. 2.Be qualified and certified. 3.Be active and hands on. 4.Know athletes health status. 5.Monitor and enforce rules and regulations. 6.Monitor and scrutinise the environment. 7.Inform athletes of safety and emergency procedures. 8.Be vigilant. 9.Be prudent, careful and prepared.

FACILITY MAINTENANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT Instruction – instruct athletes in safe and effective strength and conditioning techniques. Human resources – must use qualified and knowledgeable personnel. Medical clearance – all must fill in a pre- activity questionnaire. Emergency care plan – is a written document that details the proper procedures for catering for injuries.

FACILITY MAINTENANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT Record keeping – on file should be the following – cleaning, maintance, safety procedures, manufacturers warranties and guidelines, assumption of risk forms, medical waivers and clearance forms, personal credititials, professional guidelines, injury report forms.

FACILITY MAINTENANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT Liability Liability insurance - all staff members should have professional liability insurance. Product liability – the strength and conditioning coach can be named as a co- defendant. Product liability can only put on the manufacturer or seller of the product. Unless they can prove -1) has the product been changed, 2) was it used as intended.

FACILITY MAINTENANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT Product liability cont. – use equipment as manufacturer intended. Refer to user manual. Be certain that equipment meets standards. Buy only from reputable manufacturers. Do not modify equipment. Apply all warning labels. Inspect equipment. Supervise all users of equipment.
