What are our pre conceptions of Brazil?

 Favela is a term commonly used in Brazil to describe areas such as shanty towns or slums.  The term favela comes from the Morro de Favela hillside in Rio de Janeiro, where freed slaves first established a community of squatters in the 1890s.  Favelas surround every major city in Brazil  Many people have no electricity or running water  They are often right next to wealthy neighbourhoods

In Rio around 1 in3 people live in one of it’s 763 favelas

Many of the favelas lack adequate provisions

“The architecture of survival”…

Some are better than others…

Favelas surround EVERY MAJOR CITY in Brazil The wealthy use numerous “creative” techniques to avoid interacting with the poor / avoid favela areas Ex: Highrises, Helipads

Armored Vehicles “Do it yourself armored car kits are one of the most common purchases of the Brazilian upper class Military vehicles modified for civilian use Dupont USA offers a large selection of civilian body armor and other personal protection gear Armored Vehicles
