P ROFESSIONAL I NFORMATION Greetings UWG colleagues and professors! My name is Ruben L. Barkley and I am in the process of the completing the MEDT initial certification program in School Library Media Specialist. Throughout the program, I have been fortunate enough to collaborate and learn from some of the most knowledgeable individuals in the field of education. Personally, I have been in the field of education for nearly 10 years. Initially starting out as a Social Studies teacher in the Dekalb County School System, then moving to the Atlanta Public School System as an Instructional Technology Specialist, where I have collaborated with teachers on how to effectively integration of technology into the curriculum for the last 9 years.

P URPOSE OF THE ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO The purpose of the Electronic Portfolio is to compile examples of my projects and assignments into one document, that were completed while I pursued my MEDT Initial Certification for School Library Media Specialist at UWG.

R OLE OF THE SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST The School Library Media Specialist (SLMS) must serve as an Instructional Leader in the use of information resources and literature. For example, the School Library Media Specialist must plan collaboratively with teachers to integrate literature, resources and information literacy skills into the Georgia Performance Standards based curriculum. In addition, the SLMS must assist teachers in the selection and integration of appropriate literacy resources and 21 st Century technologies. The SLMS must develop, administer, and manage programs and facilities for the use of information resources. For example, the SLMS must develop and revise a detailed policies and procedures handbook, covering the services provided in the media center. The SLMS must select and order resources aligned with system policies and the school’s curriculum needs. For example, the SLMS must build the media center collection based on curriculum and instructional needs of the teachers and administrators. The SLMS must administer and maintain a center and a program that fosters a positive learning environment. For example, the SLMS must maintain a flexible, accessible schedule for media center and ensure that students are on-task when utilizing the resources found in the media center.

O RIENTATION TO THE SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER This project was a course requirement for MEDT 6466 The Media Program. This project met the following standards: ALA/AASL 1.2 and 1.4 by emphasizing the importance of providing a stimulating learning environment for students and staff through planning, collaboration and organization of quality programs. CoE 1.4, 1.6, and 1.9 by requiring the media specialist to be proactive, adaptive, and sensitive to the needs of all patrons.

P OLICIES AND PROCEDURES HANDBOOK This project was a course requirement for MEDT 6461 Administration of the School Library Media Center. This project met the following standards: ALA/AASL 3.1, 3.3, 4.2 by creating a document which requires collaboration and research about effective practices and by managing the information gained in order to select policies, procedures and criteria which meet the needs of our local school and patrons. CoE 1.8 by producing a handbook that requires the media specialist to be a decision maker and to be adaptive in order to produce transformational systemic change.

2- YEAR MEDIA PLAN This project was a course requirement for MEDT 6466 The Media Program. This project met the following standards: ALA/AASL 1.2 and 1.4 by emphasizing the importance of providing a stimulating learning environment for students and staff through planning, collaboration and organization of quality programs. CoE 1.4, 1.6, and 1.9 by requiring the media specialist to be proactive, adaptive, and sensitive to the needs of all patrons.

N EWSLETTER This project was a course requirement for MEDT 6461 Administration of the School Library Media Center. This project met the following standards: ALA/AASL 1.1 and 1.3 by promoting efficient and ethical information seeking behavior and by facilitating access to information. CoE 1.8 by being knowledgeable about quality resources and by being proactive and providing information that can help remove barriers that impede lifelong learning.

I N - SERVICE PROJECT This project was a course requirement for MEDT 7461 Instructional Design and involved focusing on a specific technology standard and using specific Georgia Performance Standards as the context for a Faculty/Staff in-service. This project met the following standards: ALA/AASL 2.2,2.3, and 3.2 by requiring collaboration with instructors on relevant topics and promoting information literacy skills. CoE 1.8 by being knowledgeable about both AR and the Dewey Decathlon, by being collaborative with instructors and reflective about the process, looking for ways of improving.

N ETWORK D IAGRAM This project was a course requirement for MEDT 6467 Technology for Media Services and involved creating a media center network plan and diagram that incorporated both the current and future needs of the Library Media Center. Fulfills the following standards: ALA/AASL 4.1 and 4.2 by managing and using information and program resources. CoE 1.8 by requiring the media specialist’s ability to make decisions related to planning and funding as well as to be adaptive based on project requirements.

S ELECTION POLICY This project was a course requirement for MEDT 6465 Selection of Materials and required accessing information from other instructional partners in order to share and promote the ethical and legal principles of education and librarianship. Fulfills the following standards: ALA/AASL 3.2 and 4.3 by requiring the media specialist to be instructional partners with other media specialists and by requiring strategic planning with teachers and administrators to develop a library media program that meets the needs of its patrons. CoE 1.1, 1.4, 1.5, 1.8 by requiring the media specialist to be collaborative, knowledgeable, adaptive, and a decision maker.
