Legislation and Louisiana Wetlands
Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act passed in 1990 named for La. Senator John Breaux of Louisiana. Primary focus is on restoration and protection of Louisiana wetlands. It has a 9 year life span.
Effectiveness of Act Established Coastal Wetland Conservation Grant Program Designates 70% of authorized funds go to the state of Louisiana; 15% to coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant Program; and 15% to North America Wetlands Conservation Act Program The Act encourages partnerships in reducing wetlands loss
Funding The Act is funded through taxes paid on fishing equipment, import duties, small engine and motorboat fuels.
Accomplishments of the Act Provided $33-44 million per year in federal funding for the state of La. For restoration projects. The costal Wetlands Conservation Act each receive about &7-9 million per year in federal funds for restoration projects.
