Understanding Team Leadership Skills Leadership is a critical component in the success of any group or team. In the workplace, teams are created to help accomplish the overall goals of the organization. Within teams, it is important to have people who have the skills to effectively organize, communicate, and operate ethically with team members. Understanding Team Leadership Skills Group Communication The communication process involves the exchange of information. If you have ever been in an environment where you could not speak the common language of the local population, you have an understanding of how important effective communication can be. Effective communication involves a sender, who transmits a message to a receiver – and the receiver, who in turn, provides feedback that the message was (or was not) understood. Understanding Team Leadership Skills Understanding Business Ethics Many people live by certain sets of rules. Some of the rules may have a strong moral or religious influence or none at all. Ethics can be a complex and hotly debated topic. Laws and statutes can clearly define “right and wrong” in a society, but ethics are needed to fill in the gray areas that are not covered by laws. Ethics in business help us understand, define, and live by our own sense of right and wrong in business transactions. By practicing a strong ethical business philosophy, we are able to build strong, long-term relationships with our team, managers, fellow employees, and customers. Understanding Team Leadership Skills Developing Organizational Skills As humans, we have proven ourselves to be resourceful, creative, and capable of doing amazing things when we work together. One of the challenges of leadership, however, is to organize people into groups so they can effectively work together and accomplish goals. Good leaders have the ability to create structure within their groups by understanding and clarifying roles for group members. Next, they help define team goals. And finally, leaders provide focus and motivation to accomplish the tasks involved in accomplishing team goals. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Applying Team Leadership Skills Team leadership skills come naturally to some people, depending on their background and experience. Some people have been fortunate enough to have been placed in positions of leadership at an early age in areas like church, school, sports teams, family businesses, and civic or recreational organizations. As they enter adulthood, they are very comfortable taking on leadership challenges, while others are comfortable staying in the shadows. Leadership takes courage and practice. Use the class activity projects at the end of the lesson to polish your team leadership skills. Your ability to lead successfully will greatly improve your chances of success in your career.
