Internet2 Dynamic Circuit Services and Tools Andrew Lake, Internet2 July 15, 2007 JointTechs, Batavia, IL

What to expect… Internet2 Network What is a “dynamic circuit”? Why dynamic circuits? Who do dynamic circuits help? How do I connect? Software What do I need to get started?

Internet2 “DCS” Network and HOPI 10 Gigabit Ethernet 1 Gigabit Ethernet or SONET/SDH OC192 SONET/SDH I2 DCS: Ciena CoreDirector 10 Gigabit Ethernet 1 Gigabit Ethernet I2 HOPI: Force10 E Gigabit Ethernet

What is an Internet2 “dynamic circuit”? User initiated (via software) setup of: Point to Point Ethernet VLAN (HOPI) Point to Point Ethernet (VLAN) Framed SONET Circuit (DCS) Point to Point SONET Circuit (DCS) Bandwidth provisioning available in 50 Mbps increments on DCS network

Why dynamic circuits? Benefits: Guaranteed Bandwidth Fast setup time Resource reservation and allocation done automatically Traffic Engineering Monetary cost of equipment (Layer 2 vs Layer 3 interfaces)

Who do dynamic circuits help? High bandwidth transfers that need a guaranteed bandwidth rate Terapaths Low latency requirements Video Conferencing Virtual Worlds “Intelligent” networking Network links no longer static Network can change with load requirements

How do you use Internet2 dynamic circuit services? Physical Connection 1 or 10 Gigabit Ethernet Connection (DCS and HOPI) OC192 SONET (DCS only) Software DRAGON OSCARS (mid-term)

DRAGON NSF Funded project run by MAX and ISI East Jerry Sobieski (MAX) Tom Lehman (ISI East) Allows for intradomain and interdomain circuit path calculation and setup Currently deployed on HOPI Deployed by the end of summer 2007 on DCS

DRAGON – Key Components Virtual Label Switched Router(VLSR) Single PC connects to supported switch Accepts RSVP packets and configures switch Network Aware Resource Broker (NARB) Performs inter/intradomain path calculation Exchanges interdomain topology Limited resource scheduling

DRAGON – Key Components

DRAGON User Software User passes circuit parameters Source, destination, bandwidth Many optional fields such as VLAN tag DRAGON Interfaces CLI ASTB (XML) Web Page Coming soon..OSCARS web service interface!

DRAGON User Software – CLI Command Line Interface (CLI) available Peer-to-Peer Mode Log-in to ingress VLSR and configure User Network Interface(UNI) mode Command line run on client RSVP sent from client to ingress VLSR RSVP message terminates at destination host

DRAGON User Software - ASTB Application Specific Topology Broker (ASTB) provides XML interface to DRAGON Commit multiple LSPs at once to create AST

DRAGON User Software – Web Interface GUI frontend to the ASTB Allows “point and click” creation of circuits Google Maps API

OSCARS Integration Integrating OSCARS code with DRAGON to allow for interoperability with ESNet Book-ahead reservations Web Service Interface AAA using X.509 certificates Development release with limited topology exchange by end of summer, deployment mid-Fall 2007

What do I need to get started? Option 1: Install DRAGON (and OSCARS) Assemble group of compatible switches or write drivers for your switches Install VLSRs for each switch and a single NARB for your domain Peer with Internet2 or RON software instance so can build interdomain circuits Option 2: Build own application that interfaces to RON or Internet2 instance

Conclusion Internet2’s HOPI testbed and DCS network will provide dynamic circuits Dynamic circuits provide exciting opportunities for researchers Software developed and in development Many at Internet2 willing to help you to deploy software
