The Sahel Countries Mr. Mulligan Elmwood Park Social Studies Department Geography

Do Now: Using your iPad, research and become familiar with the countries of the Sahel region. Locate the countries involved and overall characteristics. While you are researching make sure to find geographical/physical features, landforms, bodies of water, resources, and climate.) – Go to my website to and open the “Sahel Countries” power point

Today’s Task Objective: – Students will research, gather, and compile information on the Sahel countries, and be able to identify the countries that make up the region. Essential Question: – How might governments use their resources to help people?

What is the Sahel? The Sahel countries are located in Western Africa. Region is characterized by the inland partly dry grasslands. 5 countries in total – Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Chad All countries are landlocked except for Mauritania

The Landscape Little rainfall leads to only growth of small trees and grasses The overgrazing of livestock and extreme dryness has lead to desertification? – Overgrazing occurs when livestock graze the land so much that that winds can blow away the soil – What is desertification?

The People Of The Sahel Arabic speaking Muslims – Other African languages and French spoken as well. Difficult living conditions lead to smaller populations compared to other parts of Africa Live in small rural villages or towns People were once nomadic

Let’s Get To Work Each group will get a country in the Sahel and finish the model of the outline that is to be handed out. At the conclusion of your assignment, one student from each group is required to Mr. Mulligan the file (a picture is fine) and each student is then responsible for obtaining all of the outlines from my website.
