Intro & History History: Built in 1898 for storage of American war ships Established as a detention camp in 2002, home to hundreds of Al-Queda and Taliban fighters The problem: Guantanamo Bay uses unnecessary force to interrogate inmates. Torture is very common Depravity of food and water

Pros Keeps potential terrorists locked up Makes the United States a stronger force If Guantanamo did close, it would be very difficult to contain the detainees somewhere else

Cons Can provoke more terrorism (Other nations may get upset about how detainees are treated, and plan an attack) Completely inhumane, should be managed like a typical prison Inmates can be detained without a trial

Supporting Views Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, “Information that has been gained from the detainees there has saved lives of people from our country and other countries to our certain knowledge.” Republican Senator, Lindsey Graham, “Whatever image problems that linger around Guantanamo Bay pale in comparison to the risk of not having a prison.” 6/no-good-reason-to-close-gitmo 6/no-good-reason-to-close-gitmo

Criticizing Views Jimmy Carter stated, “What has happened at Guantanamo Bay... does not represent the will of the American people. I'm embarrassed about it; I think it's wrong. I think it does give terrorists an unwarranted excuse to use the despicable means to hurt innocent people.” The European Union, The Organization of American States, the Human Rights Watch and more all oppose Guantanamo, due to it’s poor treatment of inmates. ref=jauin.da.ru
