In the 1600’s European sailors began to visit Australia. Europeans began to settle in Australia in the 1700’s. There are now about 22 million people in Australia. About 60% of the people live in five capital cities. (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide). Australia is a very old country. It has some unique plants and animals. Many of the animals are not found anywhere else. Kangaroos, koalas, emus, platypus, kookaburras, and dingoes only live in Australia. Australia also has the greatest number of reptiles of any country (755 species). It also has the most venomous snakes in the world. Australia is a unique country.
