5th Grade unit 4 vocabulary By: Ben Witkowski

Decimal point A decimal point is a small dot that separates the whole number from the partial number. Example: 3.4, the 3 is the whole number and the 4 is the partial number and the dot is the decimal, 7.23, 7 is the whole number. 23 is the partial number and the dot in the middle is the decimal point.

Dividend The dividend is the number that is being divided by. Example: 56/8 the 56 is the dividend because it is 56 divided by /45 the 478 is the dividend number because it is 478 divided by 45.

Remainder A remainder is the left over when doing certain division problems. 72/5=14 r2, the r2 means remainder is 2 because 72/5=14 but there is still 2 left over so it is 14 r2. 67/8=8 r3, the r3 means remainder 3 because 67/8=8 with 3 remainder.

Multiples A Multiple of a number is the answers you get when you multiple a number by other numbers. Some multiples of 3 are 6,9,12,15, and etc. Some multiples of 8 are 16,24,32,40, and etc.

Magnitude estimate A Magnitude estimate is a estimate that tells you roughly the place value of the answer a magnitude estimate is =1200 so the answer for should be in the one thousands place. 400, ,983 the magnitude estimate is 400, ,000=100,000 so the answer for 400, ,983 should be in the hundred thousands place.

Divisor The divisor is the number that is not being divided by, but is doing the dividing. 76/3 the divisor is 3 because the problem is 72 divided by 3. 64/8 the 8 is the divisor because the problem is 64 divided by 8.

Map scale A map scale is a measurement that shows you how long a distance is on a map. On map A the map scale says 2 centimeters = 15 miles, so 10 centimeters = 75. On map B the map scale says 1inch = 100 miles, so 3 inches= 300 miles.

Quotient A Quotient is the number you get when you divide a number by a different number. 21/3=7. 7 is the quotient.12/2=6, 6 is the quotient.

Variable A variable is a letter that stands for a number in a problem. 56/r=8 the r is the variable. h/53=345 the h is the variable.
