Reorganizations New Position of Director, Student, Alumni, and Community Affairs (Mary Ann Vimont) –Continuation of work with student organizations –Accentuated focus on alumni affairs –Greater attention to public and community relations and marketing New Full-Time Director of Development –Location: Suite 133 in Dickey Hall –Josh Shepherd will be there as well

New Institute for Educational Research (Lars Bjork, Director) –Strengthen culture of research through support for interdisciplinary dialogue and inquiry –Expand research opportunities and support for graduate students –Provide additional support for faculty pursuing grants –Increase number of grant proposals and total research funding –Reenergize research-based professional development initiatives for teachers, administrators, and other professionals, in collaboration with KDE, Central Kentucky Educational CO-OP, and others

Strategy –Begin with a low-performing elementary school –Leverage existing programs and services more effectively –Work within the existing administrative system –Prototype that can be scaled up across the school system –Strong curricular focus on literacy (reading and language arts) –High quality early education and day care at Early Start Center of Excellence. Pilot this year. –Infusion of the arts (visual, dance, drama, etc.) –Foreign language instruction

Work with families as well as students in this area –Strong parental involvement –Expanded use of technology in instruction –Mentors and tutors for students: FCPS central office personnel and UK students –Strategic use of pre-teacher and student teacher placements that provides on-site professional development for teachers around identified needs –Hub for a pilot leadership development program for current FCPS elementary principals –A district program with an alternative to a traditionally structured site-based council

Kentucky 3-12 Student Assessment KDE has invited UK to manage (and help redesign) the state student assessment and accountability system. Advantages for the College –Visibility as a partner with the state (our land-grant mission) –Resources –Recognition of faculty expertise in content, methodology, etc. –Expanded opportunities for campus collaboration –Research opportunities for faculty and students –National visibility: opportunities to recruit faculty, post- docs, and students –Where we are (Skip Kifer)

Interdepartmental - Interdisciplinary Ph.D. –An outgrowth of discussions with Graduate School on the current Cooperative Ed.D. Program, particularly in EDA –Graduate School Dean is receptive to EDA redesigning its Ed.D. –More practitioner oriented –More use of faculty at regional comprehensive universities –Add a Ph.D. designed to prepare researchers –Interdisciplinary focus was suggested –Limits of current Ed.D. programs focused on professional preparation

Interdepartmental - Interdisciplinary Ph.D. –The College’s Research Extensive mission. –National focus on preparing educational researchers –Desire to expand international collaborative agreements that require Ph.D.s –Would not alter existing Ph.D.s –Dean will appoint a study committee and invite participation from various departments –Report back to the faculty in December

Redesign of the Elementary Ed. Program –Ron Atwood and Mary Shake, Co-Chairs –Will comply with campus four-year graduation agreement –Must be ready for implementation in Fall 2005
