Exiting the Classroom

You are dismissed when I dismiss you, not when the bell rings Turn in any classwork you have due into the wooden bin Leave it how you found it – Chairs and tables in proper places – Trash in the trashcan (I am not your maid!)

Missing Class

Check the “While You Were Out” Binder for missing handouts/homework It’s your job to schedule a makeup test date. I will not seek you out. Unless I receive a note signed by your parent/guardian, your absence is unexcused – You lose participation points for not being in class

Procedures for the Do Now Activity (DNA) Answers must be written in complete sentences. You must have an answer to every question for full credit. Work silently and independently. You may use your notes if you need to, not your classmates. You need to use the DNA sheet that I give you. If you lose yours, you will not receive another.

How the DNA is graded Two components: – Behavior You will receive a stamp within the first few minutes of class if you are working SILENTLY on the DNA. You must have at least half of the DNA finished to receive a stamp. Stamps are worth 2 pts – Completion Answers are worth 2 pts total. If you don’t answer all of the questions, you automatically get -1 pt. 1 pt will be taken off of your grade if you answer the DNA on separate sheets of paper/do not use the sheet I give you

DNA – September 13, In a paragraph, explain in as much detail as possible, why you think there is a picture of a flower on the cover of your biology book. What does this have to do with biology? Think of as many connections as you can and write about it.

Why Themes? Themes help us organize the big ideas and make sense of the knowledge we will learn 7 big themes in this book (found in Chapter 1)

Theme 3 Theme: Organisms interact with their environments, exchanging matter and energy Biology takes into account how both the nonliving and living worlds rely on one another – Energy flow – Cycling of nutrients

Theme 4 Theme: Structure and function are correlated at all levels of biological organization – form fits function Things work because of how they are made Think about real life, why does a key work/not work? Other examples? We can figure out function based on structure, vice versa

Theme 5 Theme: Cells are an organism’s basic units of structure and function Cells are the most basic unit of life and they all share characteristics What the cell does, translates to what the organism does at higher levels – Your cells divide so that your skin tissue can repair – Your neurons send electrical pulses so that you can sense touch
