Meeting Topics New Rules Refresher/Coach Comments “Marsh - Crockett” Top 10 Mechanics Video Plays – You Make the Ruling Closing Thoughts

Rules Refresher Concussions – assist and defer Head-wrist bands Unsporting acts – – players leaving playing court – Team leaving bench area before qtr ends – Pre-game entry-taunting 3

Elbows – College vs. High School Elbow contact above shoulders can be flagrant but must, at minimum, be intentional foul. It is not a player control foul, if contact is above the shoulders. Swinging elbows with no contact is violation. Thus, it is the same ruling for college and high school. Elbow contact below the shoulders can be flagrant, intentional and/or player control. 4

Coach Meetings Consistency throughout the game Closely guarded – maintain count as legal guarding continues below free throw line Let me know when player(s) is acting out Block-charge near basket Forearm on back of post-player 5

Marsh/Crockett 2010 Top 10 Mechanics

#1 - For the Lead, what does ‘A-B-C’ relate to? A - work wide; ball is on your side of basket line. B - close down (just outside free throw lane line) when ball is on the other side of the basket line. C - move to ball side when there is active play in the post; do not spend a lot of time here. Maintain depth in all 3 positions.

#2 - For the Trail, what does ‘work the arc’ mean? – Move to improve your view/angle of the play. – Rule of thumb: do not penetrate below the free throw line extended and below the 3-point arc. – If need be, cross the basket line and move into the backcourt to improve your view/angle.

#3 - Is it good to be ‘straight lined’? – NO! If you are straight lined, you cannot see the interaction between the defender and the offensive player. – ‘Move to improve’. – When you have ball responsibility, you should be able to have ‘feet, foul, and floor’ in your view.

#4 - Where exactly do Lead and Trail stand during free throws? – The Lead stands just out of bounds 4 feet from the nearest free throw lane. – The Trail stands equi-distant between the sideline and free throw lane 3 feet beyond the foul line. – Reminder; Trail should close down (move around 3-point arc) on every shot, including free throws.

#5 - What is the proper mechanic for out of bounds play above the free throw line on the Lead’s sideline? 11 – Option - Trail will make the out of bounds call and administer the throw-in. – Option - Lead will make the out of bounds call. Lead will administer throw in and Trail will become new Lead. – Discuss during pre-game. Have a whistle and GET THE CALL RIGHT!

#6 - What does ‘remain and read’ refer to? – Remain in position in order to recognize and examine play development before moving into transition. – Do not retreat; never turn your back to players. – Box in the action; work the middle of the floor. – You must see all 10 players and the ball at all times.

#7 - What is the rule of thumb for acceptable distance between you and your partner during press coverage? – Do not be more than ½ court away from your partner. – Box in; sense where the play is going and look to see what your partner can’t see. – Lead stays to help on 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd traps. Do not release to the endline until the play settles.

#8 - Who has what responsibilities during a fast break ‘pass/crash’ situation? – Follow PCA – Trail will stay with the crash if ball is passed to Lead PCA. Lead follows pass. – Lead will stay with the crash if ball is passed to Trail PCA. Trail follows pass.

#9 - What are the key points of administering a timeout request by a coach? – You must know for sure that it is the head coach requesting the timeout. – You should get both verbal and visual confirmation that the head coach is calling timeout. – Do not sacrifice play coverage to do so. – Use common sense.

#10 - What are the key mechanics of game management? – ALWAYS take care of your partner! – ‘When the ball is dead, good officials stay alive’. Keep your focus. Keep all players and coaches in sight at all times. – Mirror each other’s calls; “for substantially the same play, make substantially the same call in that game.” – Take care of business and have fun!!
